Principal’s COVID-19 Message
“We recognize the challenges but remain steadfast in offering quality programmes while keeping the public safe at our facilities”
- Philmore McCarthy, principal.
For over four decades, Excelsior Community College (ECC) has prepared students to navigate and balance the changes in the world. However, the unanticipated and all-encompassing nature of the COVID-19 pandemic has required us to make radical changes so as to fulfil our mission.
With this in mind, our institution has remained steadfast in carrying out its mission to provide the best post-secondary education to all those who enter the institution. Working together, ECC has devised a response to the pandemic that has allowed us to deal with the challenges with compassion and empathy while sticking to the core of our mission to “provide solutions for the public and private sectors” through our delivery of quality, industry-ready and accredited programmes. This is within the context of achieving one of our strategic goals of institutional accreditation in 2019: our Candidacy for Institutional Accreditation from the University Council of Jamaica.
We are cognizant too of the critical role we play in helping our students achieve their academic and professional goals. As such, we have been working assiduously to ensure that our students are not left behind in these trying times. We have moved quickly to put most of our courses online, ensuring they meet the same quality standards for which ECC is known. Our Online and Distance Education Centre (ODEC) continues to focus on the instructional design and training that will allow us to create an outstanding virtual teaching and learning environment. The strategies devised, in consultation with all stakeholders, are working and our students are fully engaged.
Additionally, we have upgraded our communication platforms instituting a Live Chat feature on our website and providing a WhatsApp direct line. Current students can also dialogue with their lecturers via their CUG numbers and we continue to be available to the public via email and our work mobile numbers.
As always, the health and safety of all is paramount to us and the Emergency Response team (at our Health & Wellness Centre) has been working to ensure all our campuses are retrofitted to remain COVID-19 free. While adhering to the stipulated guidelines of the Government of Jamaica, the College has managed to remain open with many of our services now being delivered virtually. Students are encouraged to remain in contact with our Office of Student Affairs.
At ECC, we are a family connected by mutual respect and care. We remain committed to upgrading and refining our operations while preserving the safety of our students, staff and all other stakeholders. Working together, we will emerge from this period a stronger, more resilient organization. Age Animo!
