The annual Bijoux Hair Competition was dominated by students of Excelsior Community College School of Aesthetics and Cosmetology.

The College was represented by twelve students overall, ten as competitors and two as models. The ten students competed amongst a group of approximately 55 professional stylists.

The event was dubbed the Jamaica Hair Style Competition and was held at the Knutsford Court Hotel March 26. The competition had three style categories- weaving, braiding and fantasy.

The students were coached by the faculty of the School of Cosmetology and Aesthetics, headed by Ms. Alia Wedderburn. The main purpose of entering the students into the competition was for them to gain exposure. They were required to explain concepts, inspiration and their design plan of all hair styles.

These are students who are a part of the Career Advancement Programme (CAP) competing amongst industry professionals and managed to dominate in all the major categories, including weaving, braiding and fantasy. Britiney Rennie won first place in the weaving category; Kyesha Anderson placed second in the braiding category; Michael Lee Lewis placed second in the fantasy category.

For the talent section, Hakeem Lynch placed first in singing and Tajera Williams placed first in dancing.

According to Britiney Rennie, winner of the first place in the weaving category, “It was a rewarding experience for me and my schoolmates. We put in a lot of work for this competition but never expected to do so well, especially since most of the contestants are industry professionals.”

In speaking to the Head of School, Ms. Alia Wedderburn, she mentioned that the students worked extremely hard, especially over the weekend to refine their pieces.

Bijoux Hair Competition is an event that is staged by Bijoux Beauty Elements in separate countries across the world, especially in the Caribbean. Jamaica is their largest market and competitions of this nature allow them to give back as part of their corporate social responsibility.
