Excelsior Community College Participates in International Coastal Cleanup Day 2018
Saturday, September 15 was International Coastal Cleanup Day and Excelsior Community College was at the Palisadoes Go Kart Track to participate in the national effort. The ECC party of thirty-four members consisting of academic and administrative staff as well as students representing the Key Club, Environmental Club and Students' Union and the general student body came out despite predictions of bad weather. When we saw the relatively short stretch of coastline, it seemed obvious that the hundreds of volunteers from various organizations would be competing hard to find things to fill our bags. Were we wrong! There was enough for everyone - plastic bottles, plastic bags, styrofoam fragments, slippers, school bags, igloos, even fridges.

In spite of the heat, the team collected over 20 bags of garbage. As we watched the debris floating in the sea, just out of reach, we were reminded of the need to reduce plastic waste and to improve the nation’s solid waste disposal practices. Obviously, there a need for a sustained effort and our Environmental Club will be launching a project to raise awareness of this issue.
After a busy morning, it was back to the Main Campus for a snack. Next stop – Freshers' Hike!
