The Certificate in Phlebotomy programme has a duration of one year over two semesters with
laboratory sessions and a summer internship. This programme is a dynamic one whereby
learners will be exposed to industry practices and experiences as much as possible.
Students will learn how to perform venepuncture in laboratory settings through hands-on
coursework and practicum or internship requirements. In addition to phlebotomy skills, students
will learn basic medical skills such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) as well as safe and
efficient work practices through a combination of theory and laboratory activities.
The Certificate in Phlebotomy programme prepares graduates for the position of phlebotomist in
a blood bank, laboratory or any other patient care facility. Graduates shall be capable of
functioning in all primary healthcare facilities including private home care.
Learners and graduates will be able to:
1. Practise universal safety precautions.
2. Maintain patient confidentiality.
3. Follow instructions and pay attention to detail.
4. Execute accurate record-keeping involving clerical tasks and making computer entries.
5. Provide safe and effective care across the lifespan of patients in a variety of healthcare
or home-based settings.
6. Work collaboratively with members of the healthcare team to provide patient care and manage medical emergencies.
7. Apply ethical, legal and professional principles of the healthcare profession.
8. Effectively interact with patients, families, members of the healthcare team and other
ancillary medical personnel in a therapeutic and professional manner.
9. Communicate effectively in writing and orally.
10. Display interpersonal skills appropriate for working in patient services.
11. Demonstrate professional problem-solving skills in a helping relationship.
12. Respect diversity and differences in human relations and services.
13. Provide appropriate emotional support.
Technical and interpersonal skills acquired in this programme are the basis for an expanding
variety of rewarding and challenging careers in healthcare facilities as follows:

• Medical and diagnostic laboratories

• Outpatient care centres
• Nursing homes
• Long-term care facilities
• Health maintenance organisations
• Public health agencies
• Research institutions
This programme targets any of the following:
• Persons with some industry experience but who need formal training
• Mature learners interested in pursuing tertiary education in phlebotomy
• High school graduates who seek certification in the health services
Standard Matriculation
A minimum of three (3) passes in subjects at CSEC or GCE O-Level; English ‘A’ (CSEC) or
English language (GCE), mathematics and a science subject preferably biology or its equivalent.
Alternate Forms of Matriculation
• Equivalent qualification(s) as determined by CCCJ
• Mature status as determined by CCCJ
